簡介：鄉紳沃辛（Michael Redgrave 飾）來到倫敦城內拜訪阿爾及（Michael Denison 飾），而實際目的是后者的表妹格溫多蘭，為了便于探望格溫多蘭，沃辛虛構了一位倫敦的不肖昆仲歐內斯特。阿爾及對沃辛在鄉下監護的姑娘西西莉情有獨鐘，于是出面幫助沃辛向格溫多蘭求婚，盡管歐內斯特（真誠）這個假名對姑娘有莫名的吸引力，但沃辛的棄兒出身讓未來岳母一口回絕。阿爾及在沃辛之前趕到他鄉下的住處，裝作歐內斯特如愿結識了西西莉，未幾沃辛與格溫多蘭母女先后抵達，虛擬人物“歐內斯特先生”的騙局終被揭穿，兩位男士一時手足無措，但突然浮出水面的一段陳年往事，讓兩對戀人的前途峰回路轉。 本片根據王爾德同名作品改編。

簡介：During the US Civil War, Union POWs escape in a balloon and end up stranded on a South Pacific island, inhabited by giant plants and animals. Clamen In 1865, during the siege of Richmond, Virginia, the union soldiers POW Captain Harding, Neb and Herbert escape in a balloon during a storm with two confederate prisoners, Sergeant Pencroft and the journalist Spilett. The uncontrollable wind takes the balloon to a mysterious island in the South Pacific in the area of New Zealand. Captain Harding self-proclaims the leader of the group and they look for food; sooner they discover that they are stranded in an island. Further, they are attacked by a giant crab that becomes their first meal. Along the days, they build a shelter and finds that the island is inhabited by giant animals. A couple of days later, they find two castaways on the beach, the aristocratic Lady Mary Fairchild and her sexy niece Elena. Later they find a trunk with weapons and instruments like sextant and shelter with a journal of a man left alone in the island by pirates. When the pirate vessel arrives in the island, they are helped by Captain Nemo of the Nautilus, a submarine that had supposedly sunk in the coast of Mexico eight years ago. During the making of the film, Alec Guinness was mistaken by a small boy for an actual priest. This episode appears to have played a part in Guinness's later conversion to Roman Catholicism.
