簡介：故事發生在第二次世界大戰期間，為了躲避戰火，堅強的母親塞西拉（索菲婭·羅蘭 Sophia Loren 飾）帶著13歲的女兒羅塞塔（艾倫諾拉·布朗 Eleonora Brown 飾）離開了他們的故鄉羅馬，暫時來到地處偏遠的小鎮西賽羅定居。在這里，塞西拉結識了準備成為醫生的小伙子米凱爾（讓-保羅·貝爾蒙多 Jean Paul Belmondo 飾）。 米凱爾是一個生性浪漫的男人，熱愛文學，他教羅塞塔識字讀詩，久而久之，羅塞塔愛上了他，可是很顯然，米凱爾的目光始終鎖定在塞西拉的身上。為了幫助塞西拉搞到食物填飽肚子，米凱爾來到了父親的朋友家，哪知道在那里遇見了一個德國軍官，德國軍官強烈譴責米凱爾不上戰場的行為，并且打算強行把他帶走。
